A favicon is an icon associated with a website, that can be displayed on a browser tab, in the address bar, for bookmarks (favorites) and (desktop) shortcuts. The name originates from the words ‘Favorite’ and ‘Icon’.
By default, your WordPress website will show a favicon set by your hosting company.
In my opinion, the best plugin to install a custom favicon for your website is ‘All in One Favicon’ by Arne Franken.
Installing the plugin
Go to your website, and login to WordPress.
Go to your Dashboard, and click ‘Plugins’ and then ‘Add New.’
Type “All in one Favicon” in the search bar, and hit Enter.
The first result is the plugin you need. Click ‘Install Now’, and then ‘OK’.
Click ‘Activate Plugin’.
The plugin is now installed and activated.
Setting a Favicon
To access the ‘All in One favicon’ plugin, click ‘Settings’ and then ‘All in one favicon’.
Here, click the ‘Upload’-button, for the filetype of your choice, for a frontend favicon. A frontend favicon is the favicon people will see when visiting your website.
Navigate to a folder on your computer that contains a picture you want to set as your favicon, select it, and click ‘Open’. Finally, click the blue ‘Save changes’-button.
Done! You have now set a favicon for your website!
The favicon will now show when visiting your site, for instance, on the tab of Google Chrome:
You can also install a favicon for the backend, which means it’ll show when you’re in the WordPress admin area.
