If you happen to have a hosting package at Hostgator that allows you to host multiple website, and buy your domain names at Namecheap, this article will guide you to get your domains hosted.
Changing DNS servers
To host your NameCheap domain at Hostgator, you’ll have to change the DNS servers at NameCheap, and post them to your server at HostGator.
Step 1: find your Hostgator name server address
First, you’ll need to find your name server address at Hostgator. If you don’t know what these are, follow these steps:
1. First, login to the cpanel Hostgator. If you need help on finding your Hostgator cpanel login, see this article (http://hostgatorlogin.com/hostgator-login-how-can-i-log-into-my-control-panel/).
2. Once you’re logged into your Cpanel, scroll down completely . At the bottom left corner of your cpanel, you’ll find a box that says “Account information”. There are two addresses under ‘Name servers’. These are the addresses you’ll need.
Leave this screen open so you can copy these addresses.
Step 2: Transfer DNS to webhost
Go to namecheap.com and sign in to your account.
Hover over the the menu item in the top left corner that says ‘HI [yourusername]’, and click ‘the manage domains’ button on the dropdown menu.
You’ll now see a list of your domains. Click on the domain you want to host at Hostgator.
The navigation bar on the left now shows a button that says ‘Transfer DNS to Webhost’. Click that button.
The page will now say: ‘Modify domain: [yourdomain.com]’. On this page, click the round button in front of the text: ‘Specify Custom DNS Servers ( Your own DNS Servers ).
Copy the address of your first of your DNS server to the box that says ‘1.’, and the second DNS server address to the box that says ‘2.’.
Now click the blue button that says ‘Save Changes’.
A text box will appear, confirming that the nameservers have been successfully updated:
This is all we need to do in Namecheap. You can leave the Namecheap website.
How to add an addon domain in Hostgator
Log in to your Hostgator Cpanel, and scroll down to the box that says ‘Domains’. Click the ‘Addon Domains’-button.
On this page, enter the following information:
|New Domain Name:||yourdomain.com|
|Subdomain/FTP Username:||yourdomain (This will automatically be filled in (don’t add the ‘.com’ or other TLD))|
|‘Document root:’||public_html/yourwebsitename.com (This will automatically be filled in)|
I like to use the on-page Password Generator. Simply click ‘Password Generator’, and it’ll create a password for you. Copy the password to a place where you won’t lose it, and will be able to find it. Once you’ve done so, tick the box that says ‘I have copied this password in a safe place.’, then click ‘Use Password’, and it’ll automatically fill it in for you.
Now, just click ‘Add Domain’, and the domain is added to Hostgator. You’ll be shown the following confirmation screen:
